One blade of grass
Yellowed green and furrowed
Knife-edged
Poking up through the musky, mealy soil
Fine and thin and insubstantial
Hardly seems twould have the strength to stand at all
But it does so
With many other friendly, perky fellows
All swaying close together
Drenched in diamond drops of dew
Drying in the rising sun
Forming a dense rug
A cool, shadowed floor where all manner of tiny creatures roam and congregate
Forming a thick carpet
A soft, bristly landing for bare feet and picnic blankets strewn with fresh food and summertime treats
An open space where little ones play and shriek
A uniform field for soccer balls to float across
Where lovers lie in warm embrace
And dogs sniff, nose to ground, and bounce about
Let’s not forget the front lawn
That verdant welcome mat to grace the doors of our abodes
Something for us to shape and clip besides ourselves
A fresh patch of emerald bliss emanating peace
Pause and feast your eyes
Get a good whiff
Run your fingers cross the top to test out the texture
Wriggle and tickle your naked toes
What could be better
Take a moment in repose
To wonder at
The simple elegance
Of Grass
