It was a beautiful summer’s eve
Under a yellow umbrella
On the rooftop of the hospital, a secret patio
Where we celebrated our oldest daughter’s birthday
The other daughter carted up in a wheelchair
Injured in an accident on her own birthday just two weeks before
We sat around the table
Swapping funny memories of the birthday girl
Scarfing down pizza with garlicky, parmesan crust
Laden with oozing cheese and various roasted meats and vegetables
I munched on chips I didn’t need
As the sun glanced off the treetops and sunk below
And the breeze whispered
Much later
I was rudely awakened in a black hole of discomfort
My body vehemently revolting
Sweaty and almost nauseous
Gurgling stomach distended
Pregnant with a brick
Praying for relief
Regretting the feasting
But not the party
I refused dessert the next evening
Without hesitation
Lesson learned
Cured
But
For how long?
