Cooking an egg
In the microwave
Is tricky
There are numerous techniques one must use to see it done safely and to one’s satisfaction
Puncturing that voluptuous, sunshiny yolk with the tines of a fork makes me feel guilty but it must be done
A little boiling water bath seems to help keep the egg intact
Also loosely covering it
And cooking it slowly, thirty seconds at a shot
I know this because I make eggs for my patients in the morning
And have had to learn how to present an egg in one appetizing piece
Apparently, eggy shrapnel is unacceptable
Yesterday
I thought I did everything right
But
I was using a different container
And now understand that even the slightest variation in variables can upset the delicate balance required
I often even hover
Over the microwave
As it whirrs
Watch and listen
To make sure all is well with my little, fragile creations
But I was distracted
As is also often the case
And the first pop sent me scurrying
Usually
There’s more than one pop
Giving me time to halt the heating process and cool those little gems a tad and start again
But this time, the damage was done
One egg had managed to catapult itself into the corner
A circus performer, of sorts
Wish I’d have seen it
The final product being not nearly as entertaining
The white lying mutilated in a heap
And still somehow hanging in mucousy bits from the ceiling
A feat in itself
The yolk splattered in slimy, golden rays across the back wall
Like a Jackson Pollok painting
He’d have liked it
I do my best to avoid this kind of disorder
Unless I’m making art, where disorder is encouraged and applauded
I’d rather not make something dirty than to have to clean it
But life, it seems, is unavoidably messy
And eggs will be eggs
When in microwaves
