Caught up in the Screen

Note from the writer: You may listen to this post on Spotify. 🙂

Sometimes

I wish

I could live in the TV

Where problems are punctuated with witty quips and insightful banter

And laughter is always forthcoming

Where solutions are arrived at quickly and applied within 20 minutes to a half an hour

All is resolved, wrapped up neatly with a bow

Where crap doesn’t stink

And pretty people prance around together in their comfortable homes or frolic in the surf with fruity drinks, sans sharks

Where romance is fraught with just the right amount of bumps to make it a nail-biter

Where family stays tight and friends are the kind you can call at two in the morning

And love lasts no matter what the circumstance

Where there’s intrigue and suspense to keep you on the alert

Where violence isn’t real but carefully orchestrated, like a dance, and blood is just expensive ketchup

And the good guys always catch the bad guys within an hour and justice is meted out

My adrenaline flows

With no real consequences

I feel alive, invigorated

But how is that possible

When I’m lying there

Like an overgrown slug

I’m not living at all

I’m comatose

In a vegetative state

Letting the rays wash over me as I eat another handful of greasy chips

I’m not thinking, creating, doing

But sinking further into oily upholstery

Becoming one with the couch

Breathing slow without the nourishment of sleep

A near corpse in someone else’s dream

An unattractive snapshot, at best

A wasted life, at worst

On second thought

I think I’ll turn the TV off

And take life as is in all its uncertain glory

And go outside
