A Poem to Myself

Small, intentional steps in some direction

Heaped up every day over time

Make us who we are

If there is no purpose to one’s steps

One becomes a plodding collection

Of habits

For good or ill

A sleepwalker pulled this way and that

By bodily appetites and other people’s plans

Best we wake up now

Before we give our lives away

To apathy and indecision

And become what we do not want to be

Products of our thoughtlessness and inaction

Bewildered, used up vessels of regret
