I stepped onto the spiky grass
Off the scorching, sandy path
On the island no human being now inhabits
My cousin brought us out there in his boat
Thumping on the ocean waves
Sea spray in our faces and sun glinting off our shoulders
But I digress
I left the path
To get a closer look at the only living thing now living there
A large, dusty turtle
Who turned as rapidly as his chunky legs could manage
A slow motion revolution
Poor guy, I was gaining on him quickly
And he couldn’t stop me
Or so I thought
Turns out the slow poke had some friends
Before I overtook him
I felt sharp pin pricks on my sandaled foot
My son, who foolishly came after me
Yelped out in pain and swatted at his legs
Had I not been so preoccupied
Dancing off those ants
Body gyrating in self-defense
My dress all in a swirl
And hightailing it back to that hot, sandy path
I’m sure I would have witnessed
A turtle smile π
Pictures for this post are mine. I now know I’m allergic to fire ants. My legs swelled up and I got hives, mostly on my arms, that itched something fierce. Fortunately, I experienced no breathing issues but was told by the ER doctor to stay away from fire ants and it took a full week for the symptoms to subside. Posts come out when I feel like it. π Scroll down to the bottom of the page to follow me or sign up to receive my posts via email. Listen to my posts on Spotify. Follow me on Instagram.
